The Association of Community Enterprises in the Highlands and Islands (ACE-HI) was established in 1986 to provide support for community enterprises. It offered help and advice and sharing skills and knowledge for community co-operatives and community businesses across the region.

'Community business 1986 directory'

The Community Business Scotland, 'Community business 1986 directory' lists the activities of over 80 trading community businesses which had become established in Scotland. It includes an overview of community business setting the context, its contribution to community economic development, support for and appraisal of community business and listing of community businesses by region.

Community Business Scotland Ltd was founded in 1981 to provide support to the growing community business movement in Scotland. In the 1980s the organisation worked with 8 regional councils to establish independent development units to support community business and enterprise across Scotland. It also produced a newsletter CB News, which was succeeded by New Sector in the 1990s, closing in 2009. In 1990 CBS launched the Scottish Community Enterprise Investment Fund, raising £0.5m to lend to community enterprises. The fund was absorbed into Charity Bank in 2000. In the 1990s CBS researched and developed methods in Social Accounting and Audit working with partners across Europe. From 2003-2005 CBS managed the Bridge to the Social Economy project, which initiated the establishing of Social Enterprise Scotland. From the 1990s CBS was known as CBS Network and closed in 2015.

Strathclyde Community Business Ltd (SCB) was set up in 1984 by Strathclyde Regional Council, the Scottish Development Agency and Glasgow District Council (along with eleven other district councils in the region). Its aim was to streamline development, training and financial support for community businesses. It was an independent company limited by guarantee with charitable status. Its board of directors included representatives from its public sector funders, the community business movement and the private sector. It had a finance and administration team and a training resources team at its headquarters at Six Harmony Row, Govan, Glasgow. In 1995 SCB became Community Enterprise in Strathclyde with a new focus on project development and contract work.

'The first ten years'

Community Business Scotland (CBS) and the Association of Community Enterprises in the Highlands and Islands (ACE-HI), 'The first ten years: a decade of community enterprise in Scotland', October 1987. This publication covers the development of the community enterprise movement in Scotland between 1977-1987, looking at lessons learned, key issues and development for the future. Containing foreword by Glen Buchanan and 16 articles written by leaders in the field: Linda Echlin; John Pearce; Willy Roe; Ronald Young; Roy Pedersen; Carola Bell; John Rugman; John Harrison; Iain Clark; Helen Macneil; Colin Roxburgh; George Burt; Pat Cassidy; Keith Hayton; Sir Kenneth Alexander; and Tor Justad.
